Layering: The Smart Way to Stay Warm
Rather than one bulky layer, the best winter workwear strategy is layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat off your skin. Add a thermal mid-layer to insulate, followed by a waterproof and windproof outer shell that protects you from the elements.
This approach lets you adapt throughout the day as conditions change particularly important when moving between indoor and outdoor areas.
Weatherproof vs Waterproof
Not all jackets are created equal. Look for workwear rated for full waterproof protection, ideally with taped seams and storm flaps. A jacket that’s only “weather resistant” won’t hold up to hours of heavy rain or sleet. The same goes for trousers winter-ready work trousers with water resistance, knee pad pockets, and thermal lining are worth the investment.
Gloves that Don’t Compromise Dexterity
Winter gloves should offer warmth, grip, and flexibility. Consider layered gloves or options with removable liners, so you’re not constantly taking them off to do fiddly work. Thermal gloves with touch-screen compatibility are also becoming more common useful if you use a tablet or phone on site.
High-Visibility in Low Light
Shorter days mean less natural light, which makes high-vis winter gear essential. Opt for jackets, trousers or vests that combine thermal protection with reflective tape and bright colours especially if you’re working roadside or in poor weather.
