Inspect for Leaks
Start with a thorough check of all visible pipework, taps, and connections. Even a small drip can escalate into a major issue when temperatures fall. Pay particular attention to outdoor taps and exposed pipes – these are the most vulnerable come winter.
Check Stop Taps
Make sure you can easily turn your internal stop tap on and off. In colder months, frozen pipes can burst unexpectedly and knowing how to shut off the water supply quickly could prevent a flood. If it’s stiff or corroded, now’s the time to sort it.
Lag Exposed Pipework
Pipes in unheated areas like garages, lofts, and outbuildings are at risk of freezing. Pipe lagging is inexpensive and easy to install, offering simple protection that helps prevent burst pipes during cold snaps.
Bleed Radiators
If your radiators aren’t heating evenly or feel cold at the top, there may be air trapped inside. Bleeding them ensures your heating system is working efficiently before it’s needed again. While you’re at it, check your boiler pressure too, low pressure can affect performance.
Test Your Heating System
It might feel strange turning on the heating in August, but doing a quick system test now means you’ve got time to fix any problems. Don’t wait until the first cold night to realise your boiler isn’t firing up.
