When to Replace, Not Repair, Plumbing Components

Not every plumbing issue needs a full refit but, knowing when to replace rather than repair can save time, money, and stress in the long run. Whether you’re working on a customer’s property or your own home, here’s how to tell when it’s time to swap out a part completely.

Water leaking from pipe

Taps with Persistent Drips or Stiff Handles

If you’ve already changed the washer or cartridge and the problem keeps coming back, the internal mechanisms may be too worn to function properly.

Time to replace if:

  • The tap body is cracked or pitted

  • Internal parts are no longer available

  • Handle movement feels stiff or "gritty"

Toilet Flush Mechanisms That Keep Failing

Sometimes replacing a washer or float valve will do the trick. But older toilets may have outdated siphon systems or warped components that aren't worth battling with.

Time to replace if:

  • You've repaired it multiple times

  • Parts are corroded or brittle

  • It’s wasting water with every flush

Push-Fit or Compression Joints That Keep Leaking

Once a joint has been disassembled a few times or has suffered from overtightening, it can begin to fail more easily.

Time to replace if:

  • Threads are stripped or seals are damaged

  • Pipes no longer fit snugly

  • You’re seeing recurring leaks after repair

Waste Traps with Hairline Cracks or Warping

Plastic traps under sinks can become brittle or misshapen over time, especially in warm or poorly ventilated areas.

Time to replace if:

  • There’s a visible split or deformity

  • It smells even after cleaning (indicating internal damage)

  • The threads won’t seal properly anymore

Old Silicone Seals Around Sinks or Baths

Mouldy or perished silicone can’t always be patched up. Resealing is the most hygienic and lasting fix.

Time to replace if:

  • Mould returns quickly after cleaning

  • It’s peeling away or crumbling

  • You’re already refurbishing the area

Final Tip: Don’t Throw Good Time After Bad

It’s tempting to keep “making do” with worn-out plumbing parts but, a quick replacement can often mean fewer call-backs, less hassle, and a better result.
